OK...so we've made possible improvements to our d-line and o-line by adding Haynesworth and Dockery. We have also cut excess baggage in releasing Springs, Washington, and Taylor, and gained a great potential player in D-Hall. I'd like to think (and so would the rest of you I presume) that we are making moves in the right direction in regards to team-building. However, we still have only 4 draft picks in 2009 and are in a difficult cap situation. Therefore, Danny and Vinny need to think hard and select personnel wisely. They also need to carefully consider the kind of team we can put out on the field and who can fill in for the starters. Therefore, here is my 2009 Redskins depth chart:

QBs: 1. Jason Campbell (has a great arm and a professional attitude; has problems with timing and escapability, even though he has had to absorb multiple systems in several years; may be done after 2009 if he doesn't prove himself. 2. Colt Brennan (a definite project still, but has a good arm and can spot receivers very well; give him time to learn a balanced offense and bulk up, and he could be good. 3. Todd Collins (who would have thought this guy would take us to the playoffs in 2007? He isn't young, but he's smart and he can be a leader; his age and career as a starter in the NFL make him highly questionable though, as well as learning the West Coast Offense)

RBs: 1. Clinton Portis (a workhorse; can run, pass, receive, and block; very maneuvurable; has attitude issues but has the smarts and skills to back it up; he does lack home run ability, which may be due to injuries) 2. Ladell Betts (a solid power runner; can run up the middle and be useful on short yardage situations; can also receive, but has problems catching and holding onto the ball; definitely a solid #2 based on his numbers in 2006) 3. Rock Cartright (a high-energy player who sparks the team; has good speed and power for someone his size; could be used on certain downs, but would be a risk due to his job as a kick returner) 4. Anthony Aldridge (a rookie pickup from Denver; provides depth but has injury issues; will need to play well in preseason to make team)

WRs: 1. Santana Moss (a playmaker and game-changer; has lightning speed in the open field and after the catch; he is able to shake off coverage, but can be covered with double teams and big corners; his short catch and homerun abilities make him a threat every time he touches the ball, but his size is reason for concern) 2. Antwaan Randle el (a high-energy player with enthusiasm; a very deceptive runner and useful redzone threat; can work well in the slot and move the chains on downs; another small receiver who tries to do too much when handling the ball, especially when returning punts) 3. Devin Thomas (a project with potential; has size and speed; needs to be developed and gain more time 4. Malcolm Kelly (another project with potential; has injury issues, but given time could be valuable) 5. James Thrash (highly experienced but aging; can be useful on kick/punt returns; probably more valuable now on special teams)

TEs: 1. Chris Cooley (one of the best at his position in the NFL; can make tough catches in traffic and shed blocks and tackles; can move the chains and is a redzone threat; hard to bring down after the catch; not really known as a blocker) 2. Fred Davis (a potential player, but has much to learn in the NFL; has issues with being professional; has good size and made good plays late in 2009) 3. Todd Yoder (more known as a blocker but valuable nevertheless; can create havoc in the redzone, especially with multiple tight end sets; age is a concern)

Offsenive Line

RTs: 1. Stephon Heyer (young, athletic, strong, and a solid pass protector; has injury issues; came on strong in 2007) 2. Jon Jansen (highly experienced and plays with a passion; has aging issues and has been hampered consecutively by injuries; has played well hurt) 3. DRAFT PICK (we could use a draft pick at this spot)

RGs: 1. Randy Thomas (highly experienced but inconsistent; can block for the run well; has age and injury issues) 2. Jason Fabini (experienced but prone to committing penalties; good for o-line depth, but not to start) 3. DRAFT PICK (a pick would be good here)

Center: 1. Casey Rabach (fast, strong, and reliable; an aggressive run blocker and pass protector; can commit penalties and be inconsistent as a pass blocker; very valuable since 2005) 2. POSSIBLE DRAFT PICK (I say possible because he may be the only center we have and we need any depth we can get)

LGs: 1. Derrick Dockery (young, strong, and knows the team system; an aggressive blocker in coverage; made a name for himself in Washington and is back) 2. Pete Kendall (a reasonably good pickup in 2007; provides depth; very experienced and professional; is 35 and has injury/durability issues 3. DRAFT PICK

LTs: Chris Samuels (best OL player on the team; an excellent pass protector; pro-bowl caliber OT consecutively; had injury issues in 2008 and is aging) 2. DRAFT PICK (Perhaps Oher or someone could provide depth?)

Defense

DEs: 1. Andre Carter (very powerful and mobile for someone his size; can man-handle offensive linemen and collapse the pocket; tough to cover 1 on 1; more known as a pass rusher) 2. Phillip Daniels (highly experienced and a good run stuffer; plays with young fire and energy despite his age; has injury issues and not known as a pass rusher) 3. Demetric Evans (has speed and an ability to shed blocks; more useful as an alternate) 4. Rob Jackson (a good future project; needs to gain experience and learn the NFL style of play; useful for depth) 5. DRAFT PICK (This could be something to address in the draft)

DTs: 1. Albert Haynesworth (big, strong, and able to collapse the pocket and stuff the run; quick for his size; can help defenses make big plays; one of the best at his position) 2. Cornelius Griffin (a workhorse; excellent run stuffer; has issues with injuries and pass rushing) 3. Anthony Montgomery (young, big, strong, and a good blocker and tackler; can make big plays; has much to learn in the NFL) 4. Kedric Golston (strong, fast, and a decent blocker and run stuffer; needs to play to his potential and become a better pass rusher; *could be released) 5. DRAFT PICK (This is another area where depth is needed)

LBs: 1. London Fletcher (born leader; brings A game every single week; a team player who has brought intensity to this team's defense; great tackler who can make game-changing plays; he is aging, and has limited sack totals) 2. Rocky McIntosh (young, fast, and has good instincts; has recent injury issues which have affected his durability and consistency) 3. H.B. Blades (young, reliable, and good to have for depth; IMO not yet a starter in the NFL and useful on special teams) 4. Alfred Fincher (has a very good attitude and work ethic; came on strong in preseason in 2008; needs more time) 5. DRAFT PICK (A pass rushing LB would make a good option at #13)

CBs: 1. DeAngelo Hall (an intense player with a nose for the ball; has the speed to be good in coverage; needs to develop his potential and coule be a kick/punt return option) 2. Carlos Rogers (young, athletic, and fast; good in coverage but not an INT threat) 3. Fred Smoot (experienced; can make big plays; he is aging and has a tendency to allow big plays; more useful in nickel/3rd down situations and as depth) 4. Justin Tryon (has speed, but is not very big and can be easily burned; may be useful as a special teams player on punts and kicks, but not much more)

Safeties: 1. Laron Landry (has the potential to fill #21's shoes; fast, aggressive, and a mauler; good to have as a pass rusher; can be beat deep; needs to be used to his abilities) 2. Chris Horton (one of the last draft picks in 2008 and a stud right off the bat; needs to develop consistency and learn the NFL system; can make big plays, but went out quietly in 2008) 3. Reed Doughty (an aggressive tackler with high energy and a big heart; lacks speed in coverage and can be beat; known to cause penalties) 4. Kareem Moore (big, strong, and a mauling tackler; needs to develop coverage skills and learn to discipline himself)

Special teams

Kickers: 1. Dave Raynor (released by KC; inconsistent performer; HOPEFULLY not another Suisham)

Punters: 1. Zac Atterbury (not very experienced; hopefully not a bust/injury risk like Brooks or as inconsistent as Plackemeier)

Returners: 1. Rock Cartwright (one of the best kick returners in the league; can gain big yards up the middle) 2. Antwaan Randle el (can get big yards and good field position; lightning quick; dances too much allowing for negative return yards 3. DeAngelo Hall (very athletic and versatile; could be useful with his speed and mentality) 4. Justin Tryon (Probably the only spot where he can be valuable)

OK...we obviously need to use the draft for OL, DL, and LB the most. I hope we develop Colt behind Campbell, and build our passing game. The o-line is a project and the FO need to take that into consideration. Same with the d-line. We need depth badly at LB. We also need to develop special teams and find guys who can PUNT AND KICK, as well as return guys who can make big plays. Honestly, I like our running game and secondary. I appreciate thoughts and opinions.  Grin

Nicely done!  Well thought out and presented.  I agree with what you said for the most part.  It's sad to think that Samuels is our best offensive lineman.  I thought his level of play dropped considerably last season...but that could have been due to injuries. Personally I don't think he should have gotten a ProBowl bid this season even tho he couldn't play due to injury.  Don't get me wrong..I like Chris.  We do need some young blood sprinkled about the team and hopefully we'll get that thru the few draft picks that we have...but I'm not holding my breath.  We are thin at several positions and with the loss of Evans...whose gonna step up?  I have no idea about who this punter is we just signed even though he's been around for a few years.  His numbers aren't bad but again he's been cut by another team for whatever reasons and now he's in the B&G.

I can't wait for the season to start..is it Aug yet? Grin

I know you're one of the big Colt fans around here, but I still can't elevate him over Collins.  Despite his age, Collins is battle-tested, has the savvy of a veteran that Colt can only dream of right now and is a very good emergency alternative.  Colt still isn't ready to take the reins of this offense.  He needs more time carrying the clipboard and watching and learning.  Plus, he's a VERY raw product who needs LOTS of seasoning.

Unfortunately, we're still hurting badly at linebacker.  We need two-to-three players to fill in gaps (strong side) and build depth.  We also have a BIG hole at LDE with the Taylor release and Evans signing in San Francisco.  We also need depth on the offensive line, not to mention a need to plug in holes at right tackle and right guard.  Thomas is coming off surgery and the word on the street is that Heyer still isn't ready to be a starter.  Unfortunately, we only four draft picks and little cap space, we may be going into the season "hoping" that right side can hold and we can get by at linebacker and LDE.

Great posts, guys. I heard about Evans today. I also heard about Dirk Johnson. I'm not sure this was a good move because he wasn't very good with AZ, but we did need an experienced punter. If we don't go for DE at 13 then I'm sure we'll use the later rounds. I wouldn't be surprised if the FO tries to get more picks. How they do this will be interesting to find out. I think one DE I forgot to mention was Chris Wilson. He's decent as a pass-rusher, put probably not a starter. Also, I strongly believe that Rinehart should be given a chance to play. He's young, versatile, and someone we need to develop at the NFL level. That I think will spark the rebuilding of the line. Hopefully, the draft will be used for the rest.
