There's one thing everyone seems to be forgetting. Most likely, even if we do sign him, he won't play in 2009 because the league still can and probably will suspend him. Do we really want to take a chunk out of the salary cap on someone we may not be able to use until at least 2010? Again, we also need to stop falling in love with the "superstars" and ask whether it's a good fit. That is, has he run the West Coast Offense? How effective can he be after not doing anything for so long? Is the team prepared for the distractions his presence alone will cause (i.e., constant questions about how they feel about having Michael Vick on the team instead of focusing on games)? What kind of backlash from fans will his signing cause? Is Clinton Portis prepared to no longer be the "alpha male" in the locker room, having to share the spotlight with Vick?
While everyone does deserve a second chance, his presence, I think, will cause more trouble than it's worth.
Stwas, mine is not "falling in love with a superstar" but knowing that the man needs to be able to go on and live his life. I do not know how much of a distraction that he would be but if any, I agree with you because I do not want anyone aboard who will hurt the team but I do know that
if he did have the same skills that he had before he went to prison, which he probably will not, there is definitely some need for him. It would be ludicrous to think that there isn't.
The lame "I am about to cry if we ever employ anybody with a past" routine that some of us has, takes it too far and I think that it is just for show. We need to relax on that BS because we have all done something in our lives that can be scrutinized by someone.
