http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2008/12/portis_smashes_zorn_the_quotes.html

So we officially have a chemistry problem. Clinton Portis unloaded on Jim Zorn during today's John Thompson Show appearance, over and over again. He swore, he suggested maybe he should go on the injured reserve, he offered to become a cheerleader, and he said this, when asked what adjustments should be made.

"We got a genius for a head coach, I don't know, I'm sure he on top of things. He's got everything figured out. Hey, that's up to him. All I can do is when he calls a play is go out and try to execute to the best of my ability."

And then later, on the big picture, he had this to say:

"I don't know where it went wrong, all I know is it's going wrong. So, you know, maybe I'm the problem. Maybe I'm the problem since I don't' practice, since I'm the only person that don't practice and come out and play and try to give it what I've got, maybe I'm the problem. So I might need to be on IR."

Zorn's response, an hour later, to Portis's claims that he was benched?

"Well, any time you don't go in, that's the way you feel," Zorn said. "And he is a big part of our offense and he's sitting on the bench, he's got to feel like he's benched, I don't blame him for that."

And Zorn on the IR question: "No, I think he's gotten himself healthy, I think he felt a lot better after this game and I'm looking forward to having him out there on every snap, practicing [and] getting ready for the Cincinnati Bengals so we can use him as our every down back."

And lastly, Zorn on the practice issue: "It wasn't that we weren't getting the running ability, he was doing great things, his effort was high. He would tell you this and I agree with him wholeheartedly, that when he is playing the game he's giving you his best effort and I've said this over and over again, he's very wicked on the playing field, he's what you want....Each week I felt like in certain parts of the game he was getting out on routes but it wasn't exact and quick. And I thought, 'ok here's an opportunity for us to get Ladell in, who HAS practiced.' And he knows it just because he's rehearsed it and rehearsed it. I think [Portis is] a confident player and he would believe he can do it without reps, I just made the decision not to give him that chance.

More Portis quotes (and this will keep updating until I'm done transcribing):

On his coaches: "If my coaches don't feel like I can get it done, put me on the sidelines. You feel like I can help this team, put me on the field, and that's all I've got to say about it. I don't have to confront them. They know what they've got. They know what's standing on the sideline. Five weeks ago, three weeks ago, four weeks ago when I'm sitting first in the NFL and all of the sudden we don't run the ball no more? I'm hurt, and that's why we ain't running it? Cmon. You [kidding] me?"

On the lines of communication: "It ain't lack of communication with me because that's some BS to go out and say I don't know what's going on. When have I missed a meeting? Let me start missing meetings. Let me not come out and practice, let me sit my ass in the training room if I don't know what's going on. What am I standing outside for?"

On being benched: "You know, I think when you come to me man it's just a matter of who wants to see me out. You know, London Fletcher played in the game and didn't practice all week. All of the sudden it gets aggravating to [see me] standing on the sideline and you see me step into something and pick it up and understand what's going on. I haven't missed a meeting, I haven't missed a practice. I'm outside, I hear everything everybody else hears. It kind of shocked me too, but hey that's what the man said. You go back and watch film, I guarantee you won't see me make no mistakes. Maybe he's watching a different film than me."

On his understanding of the situation: "If it's an issue with me, you tell me that. Outside of Jim Zorn and the coaches on that team and maybe the quarterbacks, I guarantee you I know our system better than anybody else, I guarantee when we go over blitz pickups I don't miss my man. I don't know what it is, bro. If anybody got a problem with me, they need to talk to me. I don't know whats going on."

On his plans: "I'm gonna go out there and try to make sure I don't get hurt and I'll make sure I get out in every pass route. If my man ain't coming, I ain't chipping nobody, I ain't doing nothing I ain't supposed to do. I'm gonna get out in my pass route and that's where I'll be. If somebody else give up a sack or anything else, that's on them."

On communication: "Hey, they don't tell me nothing. They don't have to answer to me bro. One day it's fun, it's nice, you smile, you happy for me, you appreciate the way I play on the field, you just wish I would practice. If I could practice, I'd practice. If my injuries weren't legit than the training room wouldn't hold me out, they'd have me on the field. I think people get caught up into the conversation of the media but then tell you not to get caught up into the conversation....

"I go out there and give it everything I've got. If I can run through the week I'd practice, if I can't then I ain't. And I'm not gonna force myself to go onto a field and do something crazy, and then all of the sudden I'm out. What I need to be around for is Sundays and that's what I try to be around for. So I mean, if you've got a problem with me not practicing and can't do it that way, maybe you feel like you need to sever ties, split ties with me? Split ties with me. But don't sit here and throw me out like I don't pay attention, like I don't know what's going on, like I'm making mistakes, I'm the problem. You know, so, it is what it is, bro."

On his blocking assignments: "You know, one day it's chip on your way out, then if you don't chip and you get out and the quarterback gets sacked it's like, 'Oh, you need to help this man out.' So they don't know what they want. They want you to chip, they want you to block, Jason's on his ass all game long, you're trying to stay in and help, and then it's, 'Oh, you should have gone out, they was coming to you.'

"I've been wide open, they don't come to me. But then he over there and came free and he done got the wind knocked out of him from getting sacked and getting hit in the back, then it's, 'Aw man you've got to help out, you've got to chip.' So you know, I don't think they know what they want me to do. You know, when things going good you're getting praised. I don't know if people getting aggravated with me getting attention. I don't know what it is."

On how he'd like to be used: "Hey, bro, it ain't rocket science how to use me. They can figure that out. If they want to put the ball in my hands I can try to help the team win. They don't I'll try to do whatever I can. If I need to cheer Ladell on, I'll cheer Ladell on. I'm not gonna be bitter about the situation. I think Ladell went int and made some big plays. When he came off to the sideline I was the first one sitting there to talk with him about what I seen, which wasn't much, but I think he did a hell of a job."

On his health: "I'm fine. I'm totally healthy after not playing against Baltimore. So the good thing about it is I'll be at practice tomorrow."

This does not look good at all....hopefully Portis and Zorn will pull a Lendale White and Jeff Fischer. They had a little spiff a couple of weeks ago but afterwards Fischer gave White the ball and he has been running great.

I really hope that this will be over after Portis first run this Sunday and he takes it 63 yards to the house for our opening TD.

Portis had to be stewing on this one since Sunday but I agree with what Riggins44 said on the front page about leaving it in-house.

I love Portis but he may just have made it worse.

For those who want to get a sense of what's going down at Redskins Park, read this thread on ES.  It is eye opening to say the least.  Focus specifically on LavarLeap56's posts.  Not sure what his connection is, but he's definately legit and started bringing these issues up on Sunday night well before CP went on his rant.

This post is especially telling...

Now, as far as my own thoughts on the situation, I'm going to give CP the benefit of the doubt on this one.  Normally, I don't care for players airing out their dirty laundry, but I've increasing become frustrated with Zorn myself lately.   Over the course of the season, it's been pretty noticeable during his pressers that he will readily accept any praise that's offered, but will quickly divert attention away from himself after a loss.  He constantly harps on lack of execution and the players.  You know, it's great he wants to be so open with the media, but it will usually come back to bite you in the ass one way or another.  He needs to learn to temper his responses and bear some of the blame as well.

Thanks for both the heads up on the situation LadyBrave and the links to ES...they have quite a bead on this situation.

I have heard many times from many different people that one of their gripes with Zorn is that he Always deflects the blame off himself and is quick to throw someone else under the bus! This is getting uglier and uglier every day!   HTTR!

Wow Di!!...I had not noticed that but I think that I will pay it more attention.

You are right it is getting quite ugly and I do not think that Zorn will come out on top if it goes any further.

LadyBrave your info is most appreciated.

This is what I wrote on Monday in a comment to my own blog called "A few questions for the coaching staff."
"Zorn said that CP did not play in the 2nd half because he did not practice. What about the Cowboys, Giants, and Seahawks games? He did not practice before those games yet he played. What kind of message is Zorn sending here? CP is the third leading rusher in the NFL! How do you not play him if he is ready to go? IMO Zorn is becoming a little flakey. If you don’t want a guy playing that does not practice then say that. But don’t play him one game and then not for another! That’s a good way to lose your players."

Well it looks like that is the case. Zorn is losing his players. From my own experience as a supervisor you have to stand by your people. You also can't blame them for everything that goes wrong. Zorn needs to step up and take some blame. He said CP did not play because he missed learning blitz packages. CP said that he attended all meetings but that he did not play in the live practices. Well I'm not an NFL coach but don't you learn about what the opposing teams plays are in the meeting rooms?

I think Zorn is just using CP as a fall guy. CP had more heart and desire of any player that I have ever seen. I truly mean that!

I wish that CP had not went public so soon with this because we are still in the playoff hunt. But I feel for the guy because he cares so much.

Yeah Sean I remembered that, this is why I sent you the message when I read the article.

You nailed it on that blog and I think that is what Portis is trying to convey. He is very passionate about playing and with what he has played through, I think that if he sat out practice this week and was healthy enough to play, he should've been playing.

The "we were down" excuse doesn't make sense because when you are down, you want your best players in there to try to mount a comeback.

Players want to play for a coach that they know has their back. I have loved the whole Hip, Hip attitude that Zorn has brought to the team this season. But he has to be a stand up guy where his players are concerned.

I truly believe that CP would go to hell and back for the team. He wants to win. He consistently gives up his body on every play. He should have been in the game in the second half on Sunday because he gave us the best chance to win that game. The game was not lost until we gave up that last TD.  CP has shown time and time again that he can break a long run. He runs better at the end of the game than the beginning of the game. He has been a work horse. He also seems to come up with the big block to protect Campbell. Neither of those things happen in the second half against the Ravens.

Hey, y'all...I am very surprised by all this information regarding the Portis/Zorn interviews, and the posts from ExtremeSkins. If I may add my two cents, it is Zorn's first year and he's not exactly coach of the year (especially and obviously now with the mid-season slump we're in). However, I did see in the Detroit game how Zorn treated CP by sitting him out and putting in Alexander. Zorn should NOT be devaluing CP, the player who has basically crippled himself for this team this year and is one of the best rushers in the league because of it. CP has been the offense pretty much the whole season. As for other players not listening to Zorn, I can't really say much. I agree it's a little early to start thinking about changes since we have 3 more games and are still in the hunt. Besides, based on what Snyder and Cerrato have done with this team in this decade, I don't want to think about the times ahead.

Great post Alex...IMO, if this was Zorn's and Portis' first confrontation, I would think that it would just be brushed off  but as you pointed out, he sat Portis once before in favor of Shawn Alexander who definitely did not know what we were doing and Portis was upset.

I don't know and I am probably wrong but it seems to be more to sitting Portis in these situations than meets the eye.

I'll admit that I am a little ignorant to and/or have not paid attention to our coach not wanted to own up to his mistakes but if this true and any of our fans are noticing it, I know that our players have noticed the same pattern.

I'm sure we don't have all of the facts. But for CP to go off like he did he must have had enough of what ever is going on.
