I agree that Cooley is not going to catch over 5 balls every game but i do think we need to get him beyond the line so that teams do not forget about him and give JC another target.

Personaly i think the key against the saints is establishing our passing game. By doing so holes will open up for Portis. The Saints have improved their secondary but i would still not class it in teh good catagory.

I think that in a situation like ours "establishing the passing game" is not like a more pass worthy offense would be until we get everything established as far as player personel. Right now the QB's abilities is still a question mark, he and his top receiver has never clicked and we have rookies having to step up in major roles in the WCO. We are not going to be able to "establish our passing game" as say a Colts would be able to do.

I say we, as far as the passing game is concerned,  right now limit it to more surer passes and not a game full of them until we get everything in rhythm. This way we can get Cooley his receptions as well as open up the running game . Moss and ARE should probably get a few deep attempts but not many because once Campbell gets out of rhythm he usually stays there.

Confidence in our passing game is going to have to happen gradually.

Mike I agree with a lot you said, perhaps I just did not explain myself clearly enough. The reason why I would like to establish the passing game especialy in this match is that is where NO are weakest. If we just pummel the run it plays to their D's strength. If we at least get some passing game going it will take men out the box. Plus if we cannot pass against NO then we really will struggle IMHO.

It does not matter how much natural ability you have, if you fail to apply it your not going to go far.

Drum I understand what you are saying but right now, IMO we are going to have to get Portis and Betts rolling. I think that at this point we will struggle with any team New Orleans or no when passing too much and it will be a huge gamble to do too much of this right now. I don't think that we are comfortable enough with the offense to open up the passing game completely right now and that trying to beat teams with a passing attack will hurt us.

15-20 well placed, safe passes, I think is plenty enough for a team that's just starting to learn the offense.

I also agree with this qoute ...

Run defense was a weakness for the Saints in their 24-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.

New Orleans allowed 146 yards on the ground versus 206 passing yards.

They may have been strong against the run last season but I would continue to see if  they are as weak against the run this year as they appeared to be last week.

Mike I'd probibly settle for that as long as when we need 8 yards for a first down we throw the ball 8 yards and not 4  Undecided , I agree we should not go GUNGHO and toss the ball about with wild abandon.

It is kind of hard for portis to get that when they stack the box on him and force Jason to beat them.  I think that is what the saints are going to do.  When they blitz JC I think he just needs one completion to get his confidence up and start throwing a little bit better on the run.  We will be alright against the Saints, just need to apply a little more pressure than we did on Eli.

Yeah I hear a lot about the box stacking but that can be broken down easily with well timed passes behind that box...Stack the box and if Kelly is healthy he and Cooley are going to have field days with 10-20 yard passes and both ARE and Moss will catch something long this Sunday
