It's official. The arrival of Brett Favre has ended Chad Pennington's time with the New York Jets. The team announced it  cut him in an e-mail just prior to 4 p.m. ET today.

Pennington is now a free agent and, unlike Favre, can dictate for which team he'll play. And the signs are pointing to the the Jets' AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins.

Both ESPN and the Palm Beach Post report that the Dolphins have contacted Pennington's agent, Tom Condon, about bringing him aboard. Miami is currently holding a three-way audition at quarterback among veteran Josh McCown, second-year player John Beck and rookie Chad Henne.

New Dolphins boss Bill Parcells seems unimpressed by the trio, however.

Pennington, dogged by questions about his arm strength throughout his career, drew warm words from Jets CEO Woody Johnson.

“I appreciate everything Chad Pennington has given to the Jets organization. He was a part of my first draft as an owner in 2000 and has exemplified nothing but class both on and off the field."

MB: I think that someone is going to get a pretty decent back-up in Pennington
