Ok, so I saw MB put up the initial depth chart and I was just wondering about something. I've always wanted to know exactly how receivers are used in terminology in the game of football. As most know, the game of football can be quite complex and coaches call their positions differently than the way most amatuer fans call them. For example, most NFL coaches don't refer to the Linebacker positions as Strong, Middle, or Weak. They call those positions The Sam, The Mike, and The Will. The wide receiver position names have always confused me and I was wondering if someone out there can help me out? Ive looked online at stupid stuff but everyplace I go to has all the letters mixed up to the positions and such!
The way I always understood it:
X - WR who lines up on the weak side where only two down linemen are (i.e. The Tight-End is lined up on the other side) lThe X lines up about 8-yards outside the offensive tackle directly on the scrimmage line (notice they always check with the Ref before every play).
Z - WR who lines up on the strong side, just behind the line of scrimmage (notice they always check with the Ref as well)
Y - Sometimes referred to as the "Slot" Receiver. He lines up just off the line of scrimmage.
Now, what started this question in my head was how can we (if we can) read into the depth chart as to where our receivers will line up (So as of now Moss is the X, Thrash the Z and Kelly the Y???) Ok, I'm just confusing myself thinking about it.
Definitely not Moss- X, Thrash-Y, Kelly-Z...The depth chart has Moss and Randle El as the starters, Thrash is listed as 2nd string and Kelly, 3rd.
I would think that with Moss being the X receiver, in a 3 receiver set that El will line up in the slot (Y, I guess) and Kelly will be on the strong side (Z). I think that there are going to be a lot of interchanging with our receiver though.
