Favre seeks return, requests release from Packers
NFL.com

Brett Favre told the NFL Network's Steve Mariucci on Friday that he's very serious about playing again. The lingering question now appears to be whether that will happen with the Green Bay Packers.

Favre has requested his release from the Packers in a letter to the team sent through his agent, James "Bus" Cook. The request comes after a conference call Tuesday in which Favre expressed to team officials his desire to play again.

Brett Favre announced his retirement from the NFL on March 6.

Favre told Mariucci, who was Favre's position coach with the Packers from 1992-95, that he felt the Packers were ready to go forward without him, but that he still wants to play. If that is the team's stance, Favre indicated, then the only alternatives would be a trade or a release.

"[Favre] just felt, 'If you aren't going to have me back, then at least release me, to allow me to look for work,' " Mariucci said. " 'No hard feelings; we'll just go on with our business.'

"Right now he's feeling pretty darn good," Mariucci said, "and he's very serious about playing."

The Packers have remained publicly silent about their interest in welcoming back Favre, who announced his retirement March 6. The Packers released a written statement Friday acknowledging they "are aware of the latest developments" regarding Favre.

"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms," the statement read. "We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."

Favre, 38, played all but the first of his 17 NFL seasons with the Packers, but Mariucci said Favre would consider playing for another team, if the Packers indeed have moved on.

"If they will not have him in Green Bay and he wants to play and he's ready and able to play, yes, he would consider playing for someone else," Mariucci said. "As hard as I think that is to imagine, I think the answer is yes, he would consider playing for someone else if it's not going to happen in Green Bay."

The Packers placed Favre on the reserve/retired list on April 25, meaning that the future Hall of Famer no longer counted against the team's 80-player roster. To be reinstated off that list, Favre would have to send written notification to the Packers and the NFL of his intentions to play.

Once the league is notified, the Packers would have approximately 24 hours to make a decision to either activate or release Favre.

The statement did not indicate what the Packers would do at that point.

"As always," the team's statement said, "the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team. As with all Packers greats, Brett's legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions."

30-1 Washington Redskins: You can never put anything past the Redskins, but with Jason Campbell apparently healthy and ready to continue his development, it wouldn't make sense for the Redskins to look at Favre. But they've done things in the past that didn't make sense, either.

That was from ESPN.I wouldn't put it passed Danny Boy.

I hope that ESPN is wrong...AGAIN... it would be totally disrespectful to Campbell to bring Favre or anyone else in to start in front of Campbell at this point. I don't know, maybe it's me but I see a lot of things in Campbell that suggests  that he could excel if given the chance and the proper personel that he is , seemingly going to have this season. I do not think even Favre pulls it out with a injured O-line and a little over mediocre receiving crew that Campbell was given to work with last season.

Give Campbell the ball for a full season and talented players and IMO he will be better than young QB's like Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers and Jay Cutler and there teams are not contemplating replacing them for one season with a guy who should be on an Island sipping on mai tai's (sp?) rather than being in a Redskins uni breaking Campbell's spirits for yet another season.

My personal opinion would be for Farve to play for the Ravens that have been looking for a QB since 2000. Campbell really needs to get his change. I see the same potentional that Mike sees. Campbell could go to pro bowl several times if you release his strength.

If Favre is released, you gotta believe he will stay in the division and that is probably why he won't be released.  CHI, and MIN would both love to have Favre this season and see what they could make of it, MIN especially considering they are a  qb short of contending.

Was talking with a lady for works for me, which she grew up outside Green Bay.  She said in talking to family that everyone is fed up with Favre's antics.  He doesn't have as much support in Green Bay as you
would  think.

Talked to another Packers fan today and basically said the same thing.  He is tired of Favre's whining and feels team needs to move on.

I'm a Boston Red Sox fan and I'm feeling the same way about Manny Ramirez right now.  In the past 6 months Manny has

1.  Sucker punched a teammate in the dugout during a game.
2.  Taken ANOTHER day off when playing in a VERY important game against a division rival.
3.  Showed a complete LACK of hustle in the field and on the base paths.
4.  Shoved a 60 year old team secretary to the ground in an argument over FREE TICKETS that were supposed to be left at the gate for his friends.
5.  Called out the front office and accused them of being "two-faced" and "unappreciative" of his contributions.

Like the Favre situation, sometimes it's just time to part ways.

I agree the Packers should move on...so then release Favre! Let him go why are they holding on? I'm a fan and he deserves to come back if he wants to. Anyone one of us would of felt the same way If at the time Riggins retired the next year he wanted to come back

That 20 million offer is disgusting and cowardly, it shames they entire sport of football, and particularly the Green Bay Packers who have been known as one of the great NFL franchises.
