The thing is and although I am ecstatic that we got Erasmus James for literaly nothing, I think that we could have gone into the season with what we had at DE and would have been alright. I definitely do not think that we should try to push for a vet at the position but instead know that we have all of our draft picks next season to get young there, although I still think that we are going to go DT first.

What I think we need to do now is be proud of the successful offseason that we had and get ready for camp without worrying about the cap money that we did not get rid of, especially without anybody available who is going to be able to help the team in the long run. To me the long run is what it is all about.

We addressed the dire needs well in the draft this year and put ourselves in a pretty good position to manuever in next years draft knowing that we  are not panicked at any position right now. We can really radar in on a couple of guys on the DL, the OL and maybe a LB next year knowing that other positions are pretty much set.

Nothing wrong with a little depth.

But right now we have 8 DE's on our roster not counting Washington and Gatewood who can be used, situational at the position.

Believe me, I feel everyone's concern about the age of Daniels and  not having the perfect complement to Carter but that was not our biggest concern this year and everthing is not going to fall perfectly in-line in only one season but forcing it by getting a vet will only lead to more of the same problems in one or two seasons.

I just can't see  why we would replace young players with  aging players and hope to build a team that can compete for  years to come. No, we are not in the "rebuilding" stage but we are an aged team that desperatley needs to infuse some youth into certain positions. By doing this we may have to pass on a "stud" like Jason Taylor for the sake of allowing us to get younger.

Fortunately, I think that we, unlike other teams are blessed with enough talent to be able to take baby steps and still be competitive. We are in no big hurry to grab every player that comes across the wire, simply because we have guys who can get the job done. I definitely do not think that we should be looking at the June 1st cuts for line help because if the player is expendable to another team he certainly could not be dependable for ours. Yes, I supported the James trade because it seems that there is nothing to lose there and he is young but the guys who will probably be getting cut next week will be older guys whos production has declined throughout the years.

Let's have a bit of patience on this one and see what our defense does after the offense allows them breaks by controlling the clock and getting TD's with the new big targets that we have available to us now.

We have to realize too, if we do not risk a draft choice in a trade, that picking up a June 1st cut or a free agent now will be geting the best of the worst. I think that our defense is better than that right now. If we had've kept the pressure up in second halves of games last season, I do not think that this would've been an issue.

Vets aren't always bad too pick up ever due to their age, Jared Allen is a perfect example.  He's still young and fresh, and he's already a proven commodity in the NFL.

And how did I know that JA was going to come up? (post #7 on this thread)...If we had've went for JA it would not have been a bad move but not pursuing him and given up the bucks for probably the best available young, veteran DE is a indication that it was not that crucial to get one.

I think the BIG reason we didn't go after Jared Allen was because the FO was so enamored with Chad Johnson.  I would have taken Allen over Chad any day.

I agree on the need of DT over DE, though in next years draft I wouldn't mind looking at each depending on the development of Chris Wilson and crew
