‘SKINS SCALP MATHIS
Posted by Mike Florio on May 15, 2008, 4:12 p.m.
The Houston Texans opted not to extend a restricted free agency tender to receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis, a speedster who never came close to reaching his potential during three seasons with the team.

To complicate matters, Mathis was arrested for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in February 2008.

So the Texans allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Redskins eventually signed him.

But the ‘Skins apparently have seen enough.  With a couple of rookie receivers in the fold (Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly), Mathis was cut on Thursday to make room for rookie defensive lineman Jonathan Mapu.

Mathis technically will enter waivers, since he has less than three years in the league.  But since no one else wanted him when he was an unrestricted free agent, we can’t imagine anyone else wanting him now.

Nice, this largely increases the chances that the Rock will definitely make the team.

WOW! I'm glad that we released him early enough for him to find employment elsewhere...but there goes my Redskinshead Tee-shirt. I picked him to be the MVP of the Hall of Fame game.

Good. We have way too many WRs.

Yeah I'm glad we cut him plus like someone else said it was done so early that he can still have a chance to get a job somewhere else.  He was never going to play receiver for us and Rock is fine on the kickoffs IMO.

This is true ZAp, and Devin Thomas is a premeir kickoff returner also who can push Rock in practice for those duties.

I want to see Thomas take some in the preseason.  I just want ARE off the punts, he is horrible and no one admits it.

Also true, it was good that we signed Mathis before the draft for insurance if we did not get these guys in the draft but since we did he was the obvious victim of a numbers crunch....Billy McMullen should be next in line although he may make it to a preseason game or two.

I heard Mathis was quite the burner, but if we're now stocked with WRs on this time, we don't need to take a chance on a "project" guy.
