Can't help but wish the best for this kid. Also mad props to the G-Men for wearing 21 during the superbowl.

Safety Set to Blaze Path With Familiar Number

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Kenny Phillips said he figured all the telephone calls he had made to the Giants paid off when he spotted the blue practice jersey hanging in his locker Friday morning at Giants Stadium, and the No. 21 was on it.

The number had been worn by running back Tiki Barber during a notable 10-year career with the Giants that ended in 2006. But that was not why Phillips, the team’s first-round draft pick on April 26, lobbied so hard to get it.

Phillips plays on the other side of the ball, at either safety position. He wanted the number as a tribute to a ferocious safety who preceded him at the University of Miami — Sean Taylor, who wore No. 21 when he played for the Washington Redskins.

Phillips never met Taylor, who was shot and killed during an attempted burglary in his home in suburban Miami on Nov. 27, three days after Phillips’s 21st birthday. But Phillips had kept a photo of Taylor in his locker at Coral City High in Miami. He had gone to Taylor’s funeral. He loved the way Taylor played football.

“The plays he made were crazy,” Phillips said. “I just wanted to pay my respects by having his number and trying to live up to that.”

I agree MB. Sean's play is going to be admired for many years. As long as NFL flims keeps showing those hits, young foorball players will want to play the way Sean Taylor played. All out every play!!!

Good for Kenny.  To be honest I didn't want to draft him if the opportunity came up because I knew he would be put in big shoes he wouldn't be able to fill and I think it would have hurt his career.  Nice to see he can pay respect without having to do it in his shadow here.

This doesn't surprise me one iota.

It's typical U Family behavior, and well, Kenny's known for being a classy kid.  Grin

5 Canes @ the NY Giants...makes it hard to hate 'em, much as I want to.

Pookie Poo, there's nothing wrong with respecting your rivals actually it makes our fandom look that much better than the ones who look for things to b*&$ch about concerning the opposition. Class is a good quality to have.

^I know.

Its just the Giants are just a rival I love to hate--as is the norm w/ NFC-E.

But with 5 members of my U Fam, I just can't do it.

I completely agree that when we can respect each other as rivals it reflects well...hopefully the % of us like that is above and beyond the norm.  Wink

I feel ya Pookaliscous, I love to hate the NFC-E as well ...when they are on the field.

Other than that I gives nam damn about who they're dating, if they can sing or play the guitar well, or what they ate for supper last night. I can't bring myself to hate on the individual but I can hate the heck out of the team when they step out on the field against the Burgandy and Gold.

I don't understand why Clark (Taylor's friend) isn't allowed to honor him.  Sean was my favorite Redskin and I love that his U fam is honoring him, but I think the NFL should have allowed Clark to also honor Taylor.

PS- When is 21 being retired already?

Very impressive, indeed.  ST was developing into such a great player.  It's awesome that young players are paying respects to him.
