IRVING – Pro Bowl strong safety Roy Williams said he's still trying to get comfortable in the Cowboys' defense and admitted he sometimes doesn't want opposing quarterbacks to throw the ball toward him. "I will admit at times, when I had one-on-one situations and you're head up on a tight end or a receiver that can go left or right, it's tough," Williams said Thursday on the Michael Irvin radio show.

"I mean, it's just tough. Sometimes you just hope they don't throw the ball your way, because sometimes you're like, if they go inside, you don't have any help; if they go outside, you don't have any help."

Defensive coordinator Brian Stewart said it is difficult to cover man-to-man but hopes his players "want a part of the action, no matter what it is."

Williams, however, said he is still trying to find a comfort zone in coach Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense. The scheme requires Williams to take the tight end in pass coverage at times, and play close to the line of scrimmage and make plays against the run at others.

"I'm going to have to get comfortable in the system," he said. "It's not easy with the coaching change. You're used to one thing and then you have to adjust to another playing style."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is hopeful the addition of secondary coach Dave Campo, – Williams' first NFL coach in 2002 – will help.

"We want turnovers, and Roy is a turnover guy," Jones said. "I think we shouldn't dismiss it that it can be a part of his game."

Davis or Cooley deep and Roy's got NOTHING, hopefully they don't bench Roy by the time we play them.

I doubt if the Cowboys bench Roy but I do agree that his coverage game is in need of a lot of work.

What?  He is still having trouble finding the back of the guy's collar on every play?

To piggyback on this:

http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/

As rumors still circulate regarding the Cowboys’ potential interest in Lions receiver Roy Williams, there’s a chance that, if they land him via trade, they won’t need to add his middle initial to the back of his jersey.

The other Roy Williams, the one who plays safety for the Cowboys, could be on the outs in Dallas.

During a Thursday appearance on Sirius NFL Radio (via the Dallas Morning News), Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis said that Williams doesn’t fit within the defensive scheme employed by coach Wade Phillips.

Ellis claims that Williams first raised his concerns during training camp last season.  “He said, ‘Greg, this defense does not fit me.  I don’t fit in well with this defense at all.  So when he told me that, I was like, ‘Well, man, it’s still new.  Get used to it and it’ll probably be fine for you.’  And obviously I think it came to be true.  Just like he said, he doesn’t fit what’s going on here in Dallas right now.

“Now maybe this year, if they decide to keep him for this season, Wade and them will kind of adjust some things to fit him better.”

It’s highly unlikely that the Cowboys would simply cut him.  After June 1, any trade of Williams could divide the cap acceleration over two seasons, reducing the current year’s cap hit but pushing plenty of dead money into 2009.

Pro Bowler says he feels better about his role after meeting

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

Defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and safeties coach Brett Maxie summoned Pro Bowl strong safety Roy Williams to Valley Ranch for a meeting Friday to talk about his commitment to the Cowboys.

Williams said he was happy with the 90-minute meeting and has confidence he will find a comfort zone in the Cowboys' defense.

Two weeks ago, Williams said he has been trying to find a comfort level in the 3-4 defense. He repeated the stance Saturday, but said the meeting with the coaches told him his involvement in the defense will increase.

Roy Williams has 19 interceptions in six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
View larger More photos Photo store "The communication was not there last year," Williams said. "We recognized the problem, and we talked about it. And we're going to move forward now. We have a better understanding."

The coaches saw two things that prompted the meeting.

Williams missed two days of teaching sessions at Valley Ranch last week to finalize plans for his Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation pre-Mother's Day event for single mothers. The event was Saturday.

Then, Maxie and Stewart read comments from veteran outside linebacker Greg Ellis saying Williams appears to isolate himself from teammates during workouts.

Williams said he loves his teammates and wants to play for the Cowboys. He said he concentrates better by himself during weightlifting and running.

"I appreciate what Greg did, but at the same time, I'm a grown man, too, and I can speak for myself," said Williams, who still considers Ellis a friend. "If I want to be heard, I will be heard."

Last week, Ellis said he was trying to defend Williams against negative comments from fans who don't believe the strong safety is still a good player. Williams likes to interact with fans and posed for pictures with some Saturday at the event. But life with fans can be tricky.

"I'm tired about worrying about the fans," Williams said. "The fans are only around when things are good. I want supporters. At the end of the day, we're human beings, too. Everything can't be perfect, and you can't let your emotions rule over you being a human being. It gets to a point where you are abusing who you really are as a fan."

During the meeting Stewart and Maxie questioned Williams based on Ellis' comments.

"There was nothing wrong," Williams said. "You miss two days, and you see that stuff in the paper. And they say, 'what's really going on?' "

So a few words from some coaches, and Roy is going to learn how to cover in a scheme that he told his teammate he felt extremely uncomfortable in.  I don't buy it... takes a lot more than a meeting to learn how to cover some of the better TE's in the game, we'll see how Roy does this year.  Just funny to know he's thinking ... I really hope they don't throw the ball my way, wonder if any offenses will exploit him?
