The Chicago Bears announced today that they have released safety Adam Archuleta after one year with the team.

Last March the Bears traded their 2007 sixth-round draft pick to the Redskins in exchange for Archuleta, who had just finished a disappointing season in Washington. He played in 15 games for the Bears, starting 10. (The Redskins used the pick to draft quarterback Jordan Palmer.)

Archuleta had his best seasons with the Rams from 2001 to 2005, with Lovie Smith, now the Bears’ head coach, as his defensive coordinator. When Archuleta signed with Chicago, it looked like reuniting with Smith would make it the right fit.

But the Bears apparently felt that Archuleta was expendable because they like the other safeties on the roster, including Mike Brown, Brandon McGowan, Danieal Manning, Kevin Payne and rookie fourth-round draft choice Craig Steltz.

The 30-year-old Archuleta will now be an unrestricted free agent.

I don't know about being "it" but I definitely see him being a backup for the remainder of his career.  He certainly won't command any big money from here on out, not that he ever deserved it in the first place.

If it is not "it', a team will have to be pretty desperate to sign him after he has been a liability on not one but two teams in the past two years.

After AA left the Skins I bought his jersey for like 12 bucks. I took his name off and had mine put on at the screen printers. But the original #40 is Alvin Walton!

He still has enough ability to make an NFL roster and contribute as a depth chart safety and special teams player but he will never be a top paid starting safety ever again.  The funny thing to me is I always felt that we misused him terribly.  The year he was here his and Sean's responsibilities were opposite from what Sean and Landry did.  We had ST21 up near the line a lot and would leave Archuleta way back and in hindsight Sean always should have been the center fielder.  Oh well, it didn't work out and he is gone.  I never had ill feelings towards him other than the fact that he sucks, I hope he can find another job somewhere.
