mini camp day 3

http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=35646

Stump

New running backs coach Stump Mitchell spent time during practice putting an emphasis on pass blocking skills.

That's something that Clinton Portis has excelled at over the years.

Still, it needs an emphasis because it's a crucial role for running backs in the West Coast offense. Running backs must be able to pick up pass rushers and blitzers when the short pass routes are covered.

Hollenbach's Learning Curve

Young quarterback Sam Hollenbach, the Maryland product, is getting his share of reps during mini-camp.

He has looked good on some plays, not so good on others.

On one play, Hollenbach turned and handed off to Rock Cartwright. It wasn't quite as fluid as Jim Zorn would have liked.

"You did it again, you did it again," Zorn told Hollenbach. "Don't stand and turn. Do it in one motion."

Defense On Top Again

The defense continues to raise its game. Another solid session for Greg Blache's crew in 11-on-11 work.

Shawn Springs broke up a slant pass to Antwaan Randle El, and Fred Smoot raced over to him to offer congratulations.

London Fletcher stepped in front of a pass over the middle to James Thrash, breaking up the play.

Eddie Jackson continues to have a solid camp--the fifth-year safety nearly had an interception on one play.

Golston Hurt

Defensive tackle Kedric Golston suffered an ankle injury during a play in 11-on-11 work.

Trainers brought him to the sidelines and taped up his ankle. Probably a minor ankle sprain.

Golston was able to stand and walk, but he was eventually carted off the field.

Randy Thomas

Like Jon Jansen, Randy Thomas is coming off an injury-plagued 2008 season. He had surgery on his triceps that sidelined him most of last year.

Thomas says the injury feels fine and that he is 100 percent.

He admits to frustration that every time the Redskins make the playoffs, he succumbs to injury. One reporter asked him if fans should root for him to get injured, and Thomas looked at him curiously.

"Where you from? Are you from Dallas or something?" Thomas asked.

Was it tough for Thomas to watch from the sidelines last season?

Here's the quote of the day: "Rehab is long story, but I'm too blessed to be stressed."

Zorn On the Defense

The defense is clearly ahead of the offense at this point of the offseason. On most plays, they were a step ahead.

Makes sense. Offensive players have an abbreviated playbook that they just received for the mini-camp. They have barely had time to absorb the plays and take it all in.

After practice, Jim Zorn was asked to comment on the defense.

"The front seven--they're giving a great effort," Zorn said. Linebackers are scraping, filling holes and pursuing very well. The safeties and corners are doing a good job disguising their looks. I think that's helping.

"The main thing to watch is the emphasis of pursuit and swarming to the ball wherever it's going. It was great to see."

The Redskins hold their second practice of the day--and fourth of the mini-camp--later this afternoon.

Andre Carter Quotes

After the mid-afternoon lull, practice resumes shortly. Here are some Andre Carter quotes to help with the wait for more blog updates.

On the fast tempo of practice:
"Having this type of tempo, it makes the mind work a little bit faster so you make a faster decision. A fast tempo is good."

On the changes to the defense:
"It is great. It is more reaction than thinking. Sometimes you have so many packages you tend to over do it. You tend to think too much rather than play. Just to have that in this defense is going to benefit us."

On defensive coordinator Greg Blache's strengths:
"Experience. He has coached 21 years. His level of experience in this game is very crucial. He has seen it all and been through it all."

On what defensive coordinator Greg Blache expects:
"For the young guys, unfortunately they don't know him. Just working with him through experience, we already know what his expectations are as far as veteran leadership and playing on the field. As a vet, we know what he expects from us. That part is simple mentally. We just have to be professionals and go out and play."

On what he thinks the key for the defensive line is:
"Every year is the same--you have to be physical. You have to have a level of consistency day in, day out. Four-man rush, the tackles blow up the pocket and the ends come around the corner, that is it

11-on-11 Notables

Second-year linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler, a practice squad player last year, managed to leap up and tip a Jason Campbell pass, but Santana Moss was able to grab on to the ball anyway for a reception.

Phillip Daniels got solid pressure on Jason Campbell, but Campbell escaped and threw a pass to Santana Moss. He made the catch right before he would have been leveled by a hard-charging LaRon Landry.

Wide receiver Billy McMullen put a move on Byron Westbrook and found himself wide open downfield. He grabbed Todd Collins's pass for a long gain. McMullen, a 2003 third-round draft pick, has experience in the West Coast offense in Philadelphia and Minnesota, so he could be a contender in a crowded wide receiver field.

Bad pass by Jason Campbell, intercepted by undrafted rookie Matteral Richardson.

Jason Campbell tested Matteral Richardson again a few plays later on a deep pass to Santana Moss. Richardson did not turn around, and Moss stepped in front of him to get the ball. He wasn't able to catch it, though.

Last Day of Mini-Camp...

It was the last day of mini-camp, but the team moves right into voluntary Organized Team Activity sessions starting Monday.

So there's no break, really.

How did Jim Zorn assess his first mini-camp as Redskins head coach?

"It was excellent," he said. "I think what was great about it is the coaches did a wonderful job taking a lot of responsibility and putting it all together on the practice field."

Still a lot of work to do on the offensive side of the ball, though.

"I think we just scratched the surface [in the passing game]," Zorn said. "We have a little bit of a foundation. I think the offensive line is much further on because they have been here. Again, the run game is much further along than the passing game.

"The guys know what the routes are and they know how it is supposed to look, but now we have to do it very fast. We are not doing it fast yet."

Zorn faced what amounts to his first test as Redskins head coach on Sunday--at least in terms of dealing with players.

Rookie Fred Davis, the team's second-round draft pick last week, was a no-show at Sunday morning's practice, causing some concern among the team's staff.

It turned out that Davis overslept.

"He just had a setback," Zorn said of Davis. "Hopefully everybody will learn from the lesson that he is having right now about what it is going to take to get to a place on time, to be responsible."

Reed Doughty was excused from practice after his son Micah fell ill and was taken to the hospital. Micah recently had a kidney transplant.

"There are some things more important than football," Zorn said.

Here is Sunday's blog recap:

9:10 a.m. ET
Final Day of Mini-Camp

Back for one more practice, and then it's on to Organized Team Activity sessions starting Monday.

Players are starting to filter out to practice right now.

Devin Thomas is back for the Sunday practice after missing all of Saturday to attend the funeral of his grandmother.

Kedric Golston is sitting out the Sunday session due to an ankle injury.

Vernon Fox is back on the practice fields despite suffering a minor knee injury on Saturday.

9:45 a.m. ET
Special Teams

After stretch, practice starts with field goal protection. Shaun Suisham, a third-year veteran who is the only place kicker in camp, connected on a series of mid-range field goals.

Suisham had a solid season year for the Redskins last year, making 29-of-35 field goals in the regular season. He also had two game-winning field goals.

Suisham missed a critical 30-yard field goal in the Redskins' Wild Card playoff game at Seattle--certainly a disappointment.

9:55 a.m. ET
Danny Smith

Special teams coordinator Danny Smith conducted a rare media session on Saturday after practice.

So how does the punting competition between Derrick Frost and rookie Durant Brooks look early on?

"We haven't punted as a team, to be honest with you, so it's hard to tell right now," Smith said. "Obviously we drafted a guy and he is a talented guy. A lot of rookies come in, at all positions, and have to compete for a job.

"It is just competition and that is what the name of the game is and it makes us all better. We need competition there."

10:02 a.m. ET
Colt Brennan

Sixth-round draft pick Colt Brennan looks antsy. The Hawaii product looks like he wants to run, drop back, and throw the ball 50 yards.

Coaches won't let him.

Mid-field, quarterbacks are practicing the fundamentals after snaps, under the watchful eye of offensive assistant Chris Meidt.

Brennan is standing off to the side, watching. Every now and then, he'll simulate what other quarterbacks are doing. He'll toss the ball into the air, and then catch it.

"He wants to throw [with the other quarterbacks], but we tell him, ?You're not ready,'" Jim Zorn said.

10:09 a.m. ET
Fred Davis

Rookie tight end Fred Davis is not at practice.

No word on his whereabouts. Our public relations staff says Jim Zorn will address questions on Davis after practice.

For what it's worth, Davis has looked solid in mini-camp, recording a few nice catches.

10:15 a.m. ET
Reed Doughty

Reed Doughty's son has fallen ill and he has been excused from practice.

Doughty's son Micah was born Aug. 30, 2006, but developed kidney problems. Micah received a kidney transplant earlier this year.

Let's hope it's not a setback for child.

10:30 a.m. ET
11-on-11 Work

In a quick-moving practice, the Redskins wrapped up the three-day mini-camp with a spirited 11-on-11 session. Quarterbacks threw deeper passes than the previous two days, and they appeared to be in better rhythm with receivers.

Tryout tight end Jason Goode pulled in a pass from Todd Collins on the first play. Goode, from Maryland, has made a good impression during camp, but he faces a crowded situation at tight end.

Devin Thomas caught a slant pass in stride from fellow rookie Bret Meyer. Thomas weaved his way downfield, showing great form.

Second-year wide receiver Burl Toler has had a solid camp. He pulled in a pass in front of Byron Westbrook.

Maurice Mann, another young wide receiver, hauled in a pass from Jason Campbell. Mann played for Zorn in Seattle and has familiarity with the West Coast offense.

Chris Cooley made a nice grab of a Todd Collins pass, beating linebacker Rian Wallace. Cooley shifted the ball to his left arm, just as Wallace tried to punch the ball loose.

Lined up in the slot, J.T. Tryon was used to on a blitz, coming in untouched to pressure Jason Campbell. Tryon was late, though. Campbell got off the pass and completed it to James Thrash.

The last mini-camp practice ended in sloppy fashion. Bret Meyer and Sam Hollenbach both fumbled snaps, resulting in botched plays.

10:55 a.m. ET
Portis On the Screen

Play of the day from Redskins Park.

During 11-on-11 work, Clinton Portis caught a perfectly executed screen, but the defense read the play and converged on Portis.

Portis reversed course, though, and across field he picked up Jason Campbell as a blocker.

LaRon Landry stayed with Portis, though, and eventually pushed him out of bounds for no gain.

One defensive player yelled out that there were about four holding infractions on the play.

Afterwards, Portis and Landry exchanged some verbal jabs with each other.

11:10 a.m. ET
Portis vs. Landry

After practice, Clinton Portis and LaRon Landry continued their war of words in the locker room.

At some point, Portis and Landry challenged each other to a 40-yard dash. So they went over to a grass field and set up cones for a race.

A group of Redskins players and media watched from afar.

Photo finish--it was too close to call. Appeared to be a tie to me.

The trash talking continued after the race.

"Be for real," Landry told Portis.

Replied Portis: "If he wants to feel like he won, then he can feel like he won. We're going to keep on running until there's a winner."

Smoot chimed in: "LaRon won."

So did Rock Cartwright: "From what I saw, I thought it was a tie."

Portis said it was the first time that he had run a 40 in about seven years. He hoped that Jim Zorn would count the effort as an OTA workout.

Zorn said: "No. He was on his own for that one. That was strictly voluntary."

11:30 a.m. ET
Fred Davis Update

Rookie tight end Fred Davis was a no-show at a team meeting early Sunday morning and did not attend mini-camp session No. 5.

After the practice on Sunday morning, Zorn still was gathering information regarding the player's whereabouts.

The coach said this in his post-practice media session: "I'm very disappointed in this. But this is part of life. Hopefully everybody will learn from the lesson that he is having right now, aout what it going to take to get to a place on time, to be responsible."

Continued Zorn: "Every practice counts. There's no question [Davis] had a setback."

Team security officials eventually located Davis, a second-round selection from USC, who later was at Redskins Park to meet with Zorn.

11:33 a.m. ET
Zorn On Doughty

As mentioned previously in the blog, Doughty missed the Sunday morning practice but his was an excused absence due to the health of his child.

Zorn said Doughty was given permission to be with his family, adding: "There are some things that are more important than football."

"They had to take the baby to the hospital to make sure everything is okay," Zorn said.

11:33 a.m. ET
Fred Davis Update II

Jim Zorn met with Fred Davis shortly after Sunday's practice. The former USC tight end and second-round draft pick overslept on Sunday morning, which is why he missed the practice, team officials said.

Earlier, Zorn stressed that Davis and other young players need to be more responsible.

"That's a young guy--let's [remember to] set the alarm," Zorn said. "You can call for a wake-up call. Some of these guys are young enough--I am serious--to not even understand that.

"He thought maybe someone else was going to wake him up, but he will learn."

Glad to read our rookie receivers are coming along, also really glad to see that Zorno is appearing a perfectionist, and will critique our offense to the finest tweak, until it is a fine tuned touchdown scoring machine.  Just can't wait til pre-season watch to see these guys play a few snaps against a different teams defense
